Paw Stompin’ Promenade
Hosted by the Gems & Stars
Dayton, Ohio, July 20-21, 2019

Gems and Stars annual Paw Stompin’ Promenade had a rocky start but turned out to be a
wonderful event as usual. This year was our biggest to date with 65 entries! We were so
grateful to have Nancy Withers and Una Meier agree to be our judges. Tragically, Una and her
husband were in a car accident on their way to our show. We are all so glad to hear Una is
recovering well. Anna Schloff and our own Kathy Combs stepped up in a huge way and each
judged a day for us. We are so grateful to them both for helping in this unexpected situation.
We were very excited to have lots of new competitors. Almost all of our Beg A competitors
competed in MF and HTM. Very impressive for showing for the first time. We also had lots of
Juniors new to freestyle and veterans in it as well. Paw Stomp had four pairs routines and one
brace routine. The classes were mainly in MF but both MF and HTM saw routines performed at
about every level. The show ran extremely smoothly with our judges, volunteers and
competitors keeping things moving right along. On our down time we got to look at the
beautiful items at Gloria Voss Collections and eat wonderful food provided by our friends and
club members. The raffle tables were bursting, as usual, and the specialty awards were plentiful
and very well organized.
Thank you again to all our competitors who attended our show, the volunteers who made
running the show possible, our show committee for making the show happen and our
wonderful judges for taking their time (all be it unexpectedly for some) to give us some really
great feedback and most of all our dogs who we would not be here without. We look forward
to seeing you all and your wonderful pups at our next show!

Star Spangled Swing
Hosted by the Chesapeake Rock N’ Rovers
Beltsville, Maryland, July 13 and 14th, 2019

“Swing” 2019 was a very special and emotional year.  The Rovers dedicated the entire show to our dear friend and former freestyler, Kerry Troxel.  Saturday began with a lovely and thoughtful tribute routine by Eileen Hoyson and her Golden Retriever, Hatch.  They danced to “Time in a Bottle.” Hatch even added to the choreography, spontaneously wiping a paw across his eye (twice), a move we could only interpret as wiping away a tear.

We then gathered to watch a beautifully created slide show of Kerry (prepared by Carol Havelka).  Kerry’s daughter and two grandsons were in attendance. We stood behind them as they held on to one another and gave way to tearful sobs. There was not a dry eye in the place as the “Memories” slide show rolled on showing pictures and video clips of Kerry’s many performances throughout the years.  Kerry’s family was extremely touched and appreciative. Ingrid Putschi set up the slide show for viewing throughout the weekend.

Our thanks go out to the many hard workers who helped to make this celebration of Kerry possible.   There was even a special award created by Eileen Hoyson, given in honor of Kerry, called the Angel Award…  “Friends Are a Lifelong Treasure”.

Perhaps the most unique ever judges award was presented by Gay Stahley to exhibitor Darlene Morning.  Darlene lost her Golden Retriever, Della (brother to Eileen’s Hatch), just days before the Swing. Darlene was in attendance to support her sister (new beginner team) and to cheer on her classmates.

Sometimes it is about those who are no longer there and it is always about the camaraderie and support that IS there.  Such is the freestyle community.

Despite some sadness, we all enjoyed the talents and antics of the dogs and their handlers. Outstanding costumes (from elegant dresses to tattooed rockers); props that included trees, bleachers, and ghosts; wagging tails; illustrative bonding… just too many highlights to mention individually!

We were thrilled with the efforts of so many teams.  Our competitors came from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and even New York and Connecticut!  From Beginner A to Perfect Dance Partners, from Schipperkes to Irish Setters, there was an array of impressive routines and we laughed and cried and applauded as only freestylers can.

Our wonderful judges, Gay Stahley and Fritz Adamson were, as always, a delightful duo. Their invaluable comments and advice were much appreciated.  Fritz led all the human competitors in the Electric Slide and Gay’s little Devon got to show off some dance moves too!

Congratulations to our Show Secretary, Theresa Zuzworsky, and to all the Rovers who worked so hard to make this a successful event.  The raffle was amazing and the awesome program, music and announcing completed the picture. But the best part was seeing so many old friends and making new ones!  We can only hope to see more of you next year.
