New York  Paws Over Niagara K9 Freestylers (Buffalo, NY)

CONTACTS:

Sandy Guzzetti

Tel: (716) 439-4971

We are located in the Buffalo, New York area.

We actually got together after a reporter from the Buffalo Evening News contacted me and wanted to do an article on freestyle. I was just a freelancing beginner and tried to get him to contact someone with experience and all, but he was insistent on doing a local piece and tailored the article to also include the fact that we are looking for others in our area to start a club and bring the sport of freestyling to Western New York.

So....  he actually inspired the formation of our club and now I am actually giving freestyle lessons at an area Dog Academy to help others get started, and then this allows them an opportunity to meet the three of us (albeit beginners) that got the club off the ground. Once we are a bit more established, I’m going to give our reporter a call and see if he’s interested in what he started.  :o)

There are so many people wanting to try it out and play and dance, I didn’t realize we’ve started a monster I think. I’ve been developing and working on and using a curriculum to fit our 8 week set for our Exploring Freestyle sessions and the next session will be doing actual routines, choreography, music editing and addressing costuming. We have found a dance friend who is a great choreographer with a lot of fantastic suggestions and ideas to come in and give us a hand on what we can do to jazz up the human side of the partners, so we compliment our furry partner. It’s a long journey toward an actual routine, but we are well on our way and we all go home having had a great time with our very tired dance partners curled up asleep by our side.

Our freestyle group evolved from classes at the Fieldwood Dog Training Center over the past several years.  To decide on a name, the group held a contest, thus the Steppin' Woofs.  We have found, like the rest of the dancing with dogs folks, that dogs like music too.  And since we enjoy being with our canine companions, we are together weekly to enjoy routines and learn new exercises.  Performing in the community is a favorite pasttime--schools, retirement homes, fairs and even parades.  Some of us like to compete.  Earlier this year we developed the Wag Time Band.  Our dogs seemed ready to expand their music talents in another direction.  Classes are held on an on-going basis with an Introduction to Freestyle class offered about every six months.

Fun for the dogs and their people! Since most of us have rescue dogs, we do benefits for several humane associations - Eau Claire, Chippewa, Dunn and Barron Counties. Most of our dogs are also certified with Therapy Dogs International so we visit and perform freestyle at nursing homes and the University during the stress of finals week. We pride ourselves on the versatility of our dogs who participate in obedience, therapy work, flyball and of course freestyle.

Our members reside in the Chippewa Valley in Western Wisconsin Freestyle activities: Demos for nursing homes, humane association events, and Community events and - soon - competition! We have clicker/trick classes and on- going freestyle practices on Saturday mornings.

Our logo was drawn to characterize our original members, Gen, Shadow, Maya and Ziva.  Visit our website: www.flyballk9s.com and join us on facebook at Chippewa Valley Wuff Pack where we not only share our flyball information, but also our many other activities including Mutts in Motion freestyle.
