WCFO, INC is pleased to announce the winner of our Excellence in Canine Freestyle Media Award 2007. The award was presented at the Dog Writers banquet in New York City on Sunday, February 10, 2008. The winner was Lisa T. Jung, staff writer for the Downeast Dog News (DDN), published in Rockland, Maine, for her article titled “Bow Wow Boogie”.
Dogs and writing have been a passion for Jung since childhood. But it wasn't until she met Holly Sherburne, founder and publisher of DDN, that she found a way to combine her passions. “After I moved to Maine ten years ago,” Jung said, “I was in and out of counseling jobs and never stayed very long, because I was always investigating how I could fulfill my dream of working with dogs. When I met Holly [Sherburne] and was introduced to DDN, I immediately liked it--the quality was excellent--and later, when I looked on her website and read about her mission, her ideas and what issues she wanted to address in DDN, I knew I wanted to work for her. I thought, I’ve found it! The marriage of my two passions: dogs and writing.”
When Sherburne asked Jung last year if she’d like to write a feature article about the Bow Wow Boogie Canine Freestyle Seminar to be held in Saco as a benefit for Suzan Morris and her service dog in training at My Wonderful Dog, a service dog training organization in Portland, Maine, Jung leapt at the chance.
Downeast Dog News, recognized for writing excellence in the canine newspaper category, was one of three finalists up for a prestigious Maxwell medallion in the Dog Writer’s Association of America (DWAA) 2007 competition.
